English-Speaking Wedding Photographer in France
Documentary Photography, Anywhere in France
Your wedding in France deserves a photographer who speaks your language
Planning a wedding in France from abroad is exciting — but the language barrier can make it stressful. Coordinating with venues, caterers, florists, and officiants in French while trying to enjoy one of the most emotional days of your life is a lot to manage.
That is where I come in. I am Wayan Barre — a French-born, fluent English-speaking documentary wedding photographer based on the Atlantic coast of France. I grew up in Paris and spent five years living and working in New Orleans as a photographer, so I understand both cultures from the inside.
I work with American, British, Australian, and international couples getting married all across France — from palace hotels in Paris to vineyard chateaux in Bordeaux, from Atlantic coast celebrations to Provencal hilltop villages. Wherever your wedding takes you in France, I will be there: speaking your language, understanding your vision, and capturing the day as it really unfolds.
Why Having an English-Speaking Photographer Matters
Your wedding photographer is one of the vendors you interact with most on the day itself. They are with you from getting ready through the last dance. They need to understand your jokes, pick up on your family dynamics, and communicate clearly when time is short and emotions are high.
When you are getting married in a country where you may not speak the language fluently, having a photographer who is genuinely bilingual — not just conversational — makes a real difference. I can coordinate with your French venue manager in their language while explaining the timeline to your bridesmaids in yours. I can chat with your British uncle and your French florist in the same breath.
But it goes beyond language. Having lived in both France and the United States, I understand the cultural expectations on both sides. I know what American and British couples value in their wedding photography (candid moments, storytelling, emotional depth) and I understand how French weddings flow (longer meals, later timelines, different ceremony structures). I bridge both worlds — and that is something you will feel in your images.
Where I Shoot Across France
I am based in La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast, but I travel across France for weddings throughout the year. Each region offers something completely different — and I love them all for different reasons.
Paris & Ile-de-France
I grew up in Paris and have family there, so I know the city intimately. Palace hotels, iconic landmarks, intimate elopements at sunrise — Paris is the ultimate destination wedding city and I am there regularly.

Bordeaux & the Southwest
Vineyard chateaux, rolling hills, golden afternoon light, and some of the finest wine in the world. Bordeaux is a natural fit for couples who want a relaxed, elegant celebration with a distinctly French atmosphere.

La Rochelle & Ile de Re
This is my home. Salt air, harbour walls, Atlantic light, and the island charm of Ile de Re. A less-discovered destination that offers something truly special for couples who want authenticity and beauty without the crowds.

Provence & the Cote d’Azur
Lavender fields, olive groves, hilltop villages, and the Mediterranean coast. Provence is one of the most popular wedding destinations in France for international couples — and the light there is extraordinary from May through October.
The Loire Valley & Dordogne
Fairytale chateaux, river valleys, and lush countryside. The Loire and the Dordogne are ideal for couples who want a full weekend celebration — a private estate, all your guests under one roof, and the timeless French countryside stretching out in every direction.
Normandy, Brittany & Beyond
Dramatic coastlines, centuries-old manors, and a quieter, more rugged beauty. These northern regions are increasingly popular with British couples crossing the Channel — and they offer incredible landscapes for photography with far fewer crowds.
Wherever you are getting married in France, I am happy to discuss the region, the logistics, and how to get the most out of your day photographically. Travel is included in my workflow — it is part of what I love about this work.
Practical Tips for Getting Married in France
Legal or symbolic? Getting legally married in France requires at least 40 days of residency in the commune where the ceremony takes place, so the vast majority of international couples opt for a symbolic ceremony in France and handle the legal paperwork at home. A symbolic ceremony can be entirely personalized, held at any venue you choose, and is just as meaningful as a legal one — often more so.
Best time of year: The main wedding season in France runs from May through October. June and September are the most popular months, offering warm weather and beautiful light without the peak summer heat. Each region has its own best season — Paris is lovely year-round, Provence peaks in June and July, and the Atlantic coast is at its best from late May through September.
Vendors and communication: This is where an English-speaking photographer is especially valuable. I can recommend trusted, English-friendly vendors in most regions of France — from planners and florists to officiants and caterers. And on the day itself, I am often the one translating between your English-speaking guests and the French staff.
Budget expectations: Wedding costs in France vary enormously by region. A countryside chateau wedding for 80 guests might start from 30,000 euros, while a Paris palace hotel can begin at 50,000 euros and go well beyond. Elopements and intimate celebrations can be done beautifully from around 5,000 euros. I am always happy to discuss budgets openly.
Travel from the US and UK: France is one of the most accessible European destinations. Direct flights to Paris from most major US and UK cities, excellent high-speed trains connecting Paris to every region, and a well-maintained road network. Your guests will thank you for choosing somewhere so easy to reach.

About Me
I am Wayan Barre — a French documentary wedding photographer based in La Rochelle, on the Atlantic coast.
I grew up in Paris and studied photography there before moving to New Orleans, Louisiana, where I spent five years working as a photojournalist and wedding photographer. That experience shaped everything about how I work today: I tell stories. I watch for real moments. I work fast, quietly, and with a sense of the day as a whole narrative — not just a series of posed shots.
After five years in the US, I returned to France with a deep understanding of what English-speaking couples want from their wedding photography — and the local knowledge to deliver it in any region of this beautiful country.
My style is documentary and story-driven. I do not over-direct or stage moments. I watch, I anticipate, and I capture what is real. The result is a gallery that feels like your day actually felt — emotional, beautiful, and alive.
