La Rochelle and Ile de Re are among France’s best-kept secrets for destination weddings — and they deserve far more attention than they get. The combination of Atlantic coastline, whitewashed villages, historic harbour architecture, and extraordinary light makes this region unlike anywhere else in France.

For couples traveling from the US, Canada, or the UK, La Rochelle is surprisingly easy to reach. Direct flights arrive from London and Dublin, with easy TGV connections from Paris in under three hours. The city is compact, walkable, and full of character — medieval towers, covered markets, and harbour-side restaurants that feel like a film set.

Ile de Re, connected to the mainland by a graceful bridge, adds another dimension entirely. Salt marshes, cycling paths, hollyhock-lined lanes, and beaches that stretch forever. It’s the kind of place where your wedding weekend feels like a holiday — where guests arrive tense and leave transformed. The pace here is gentle, the food is extraordinary, and the light is the best I’ve ever photographed in.

The La Rochelle and Ile de Re area offers an incredible range of wedding venues — from ocean-facing estates to intimate island properties. Here are some of the areas I love photographing in:

The Atlantic coast has its own microclimate — sunnier than you’d expect, with some of the highest sunshine hours in France. La Rochelle enjoys nearly as much sun as the Mediterranean.

June through early July is ideal — long golden evenings, warm temperatures, and the landscape at its most vibrant. The light on the coast is extraordinary, with sunsets over the ocean that last well past 10pm.

September is a personal favorite. The summer crowds thin out, the light turns softer and warmer, and the island has a magical calm. Water temperatures are still comfortable, and outdoor celebrations feel effortless.

July and August bring peak summer — warm, busy, and beautiful, but Ile de Re can be crowded. If you’re planning a summer wedding on the island, book early and consider midweek dates.

May and October are lovely shoulder months. Slightly cooler, but the light is beautiful, prices are lower, and you’ll have more venue flexibility. The coast takes on a dramatic, photogenic quality in the softer seasons.

Hire an English-speaking wedding planner who knows the La Rochelle and Ile de Re area. Logistics on the island require local knowledge — bridge access, seasonal traffic, and venue coordination are much easier with someone who knows the terrain. I’m happy to share my recommendations.

For guest accommodations on Ile de Re, book early. The island has limited hotel and rental capacity, especially in peak season. Many couples rent a cluster of houses in one village so everyone is together — this turns the wedding into a multi-day celebration with beach mornings, market visits, and shared meals.

Sunset on the Atlantic coast typically falls between 9:30 and 10:00pm in summer. The west-facing coastline means you get direct sunset light over the ocean — it’s absolutely spectacular for portraits and I always plan around it.

Budget-wise, destination weddings in the La Rochelle and Ile de Re area typically range from €25,000 to €70,000, with Ile de Re venues generally commanding a premium. Intimate celebrations and elopements can be much more affordable, especially on the mainland.
